BODIES AND SHADOWS: CARAVAGGIO AND HIS LEGACY
OPENS NOV 11
Caravaggio’s painting revolutionized the use of dramatic lighting to enhance a sense of reality, often reflecting the passion, violence, and brutality that marked the artist's short life. With an unprecedented eight masterpieces by Caravaggio, Caravaggio and His Legacy also presents the work of major artists from all over Europe who explored Caravaggio’s style, including Georges de La Tour, Diego Velazquez, and Simon Vouet.

The Good Food Festival & Conference focuses on issues of building local and sustainable food systems and supporting regional family farmers. Panels will address community building through food, job growth, and GMO labeling. There will also be food-inspired tours of the museum’s collection.

SPECIAL ART & FOOD EVENT: CUR-ATE: ITALIAN ART AND GASTRONOMY
NOV 12 | 6:30 PM
Inspired by Caravaggio and His Legacy, LACMA, Ray’s and Stark Bar, and Maite Gomez-Rejón of ArtBites explore the art and food of Rome. Following a tour of Italian paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts in LACMA’s collection, Ray’s executive chef Kris Morningstar will prepare a special three-course meal in line with the evening’s theme. Wine pairings are also available at an extra cost.

Contemporary artist Sterling Ruby, known for creating biomorphic ceramic sculptures, nail polish drawings, and different forms of collage, leads a walkthrough of Drawing Surrealism.

Richard Meyer, professor of art history at Stanford University, places Robert Mapplethorpe’s XY, and Z portfolios within two linked contexts: the formal logic of Mapplethorpe’s photography and the culture wars over homoeroticism and federally funded art in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
