the slant from Worldwide

(Nihaal FaizalChildhood Neglect, 2010, photograph. ArtSlant Showcase Juried Winner)
From childhood to old age...
...our life's journey is a circumnavigation, a circuit from youthful abandon to the throes of death. As infants we're captivated by color, fun, silliness--those qualities found in Jessica Stockholder's public art installation in Chicago. We're drawn to craft, the sensuality of creating objects by hand, with knots and clay, paper and earth. Summers are spent in languor and bliss at the beach. Our adolescent bodies are wracked with desire, love, sex, and transgression, cruising for connections, danger and excitement. As life becomes more complex, we long to relive those times, we reminisce and become nostalgic--as Deric Carner's multi-subject exhibition recalls, in its thematic loops and cinematic aesthetics. We repeat ourselves, reconsume our experiences--as Zhao Yao's restaged exhibition aptly embodies. And as we reach the end of our circumnavigation, the last stages of life, we confront endless contradictions and complexities. As we learn through the fiction-turned-reality in Wim Wenders and Nicholas Ray's collaborative film: death--so unknowable--can only be framed in life.
