The VIEWS: Serpents and Spindles - June 25 - July 1

ArtSlant Showcase Juried Winner) Stretching, weaving, intertwining... ...in paint, in stories, in cinema, in photography, we find snake-like strands and sibilant strokes. Paul Waddell, with a bit of goop and radiance, paints serpentine rainbows. Somewhere between the serenity of smooth paint and the exhilaration of stippling, Rodney Dickson paints 'til expressive exhaustion. Andreas Gursky's photograph of a racetrack snaking through the sands of Bahrain stretches photographic representation to the limits of the horizon. Marjatta Oja's video installations weave snippets of stories into situational sculptures. Spinning spindles, firecrackers and interactive installations make Project Cinema City anything but a run-of-the-mill experience. In Ferus, a series of striking sculptures and prints interweave human and animal; while the Royal College of Art's sprawling graduation show features conceptual jewelry, weighted sculptures and shards of ceramics. And a string of impalpable installations, political projects and open-ended interventions marks the end of one of Amsterdam's most venerable institutions -- the NIMk.
