From Hungary to Haiti, Hear from Mothers Around the World In stories from Hungary to Nepal, Kenya to Haiti, visitors to IMOW’s newest online exhibition (and special sneak preview of our flagship exhibition Mama: Motherhood Around the Globe, launching in January 2012) can learn about life for mothers around the globe, and join discussions about issues women face around the world when it comes to having children. Check out this new featured selection of stories from Your Voices: On Motherhood! Baby (Not) On Board, Miriam Schaer (USA): Many women who choose not to have children face criticism from society. Miriam Schaer’s clever embroideries show the prejudice many women face in making this decision. Mr. Mom, Zsuzsanna Geller-Varga (Hungary): This video documentary follows a family in Hungary who take a nontraditional approach to raising their son, and explores how social expectations and traditional gender roles affect identity and family dynamics. Welcome Labour Room, Kelly McIllveny (Australia/Nepal): Photojournalist Kelly McIlviney tells the story of the joy, pain, and dangers of pregnancy and childbirth in Nepal. Dorothy and Louise, Margaret O’Brien (USA): Margaret O’Brien’s pays tribute to her aunts who helped raise her in this beautiful song. Teen Moms in Mathare Slums, Rachael Ouko (Kenya): Rachael Ouko interviews teen moms in the Mathare Slums of Nairobi, Kenya, revealing the challenges and prejudice they face, while also sharing her own story of being a teen mom. Raising Me, Tracei Willis (USA): Tracei Willis’ poem celebrates the many women who influenced her childhood, and reflects on her own role as mother to her two daughters. Dr. Aida, Mutamassik (Egypt/Italy): With this original song, Mutamassik pays tribute to her grandmother, who was forced by her own mother to follow tradition and leave medical school to get married and have children. Mother of Mothers, Andre Lambertson and Kwame Dawes (USA/Haiti): This visual poem from photographer Andre Lambertson and poet Kwame Dawes celebrates the strength and resilience of mothers of Haiti after the devastating 2009 earthquake. Your Voices: On Motherhood is a curated online exhibition of over 30 extraordinary and compelling works by artists from 21 countries across the globe on the topic of motherhood. The exhibitionis the result of a global call for submissions, asking artists, writers, and journalists around the world to send us their stories related to modern motherhood. IMOW curated a selection of 34 stories from 600 submissions that came in from all over the world!
