EXHIBITION OPENING
Asco: Elite of the Obscure, A Retrospective, 1972–1987 |
September 4–December 4
The art group Asco began in the 1970s as a tight-knit core of Chicano artists from East Los Angeles. Together, they responded to the city’s turbulent socio-political period through performance, public, and multimedia art. In fact, one of their many notable works was Spray Paint LACMA, where they did just that, in response to an absence of Chicano artwork in the museum. Now, nearly forty years later, LACMA is pleased to host the first retrospective of this seminal conceptual art group.

TALK AND PERFORMANCE
Recycling: Washi Tales |
September 22 | 7 pmPresented in conjunction with the exhibition Washi Tales, this very special performance brings to life the stories contained in sheets of handmade Japanese paper, or washi. In Japanese culture, authentic beauty is found in the old, and washi is made when existing paper is disassembled, beaten to a pulp, and stretched anew on bamboo frames. An extraordinary ensemble of performers and musicians will take the stage to portray this delicate, cultural, and emotional tale created by distinguished paper artist Kyoko Ibe. A conversation with the artist will precede the performance.
