Just Launched: Curating Change with Jennifer Siebel Newsom

Remarkable Women

Launching with Guest Curator
Jennifer Siebel Newsom

The International Museum of Women is pleased to announce the launch of our latest initiative, Curating Change.
We asked some of the women who most inspire us to curate their own selections from IMOW's rich global archives. The result is the Curating Change series, a series of features by Guest Curators on the global issues that matter most to them.
We launch with Filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom on Representation. Explore Jennifer’s selection of stories related to themes in her current documentary, Miss Representation, which exposes how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence. Learn more about the film and its accompanying grassroots campaign at MissRepresentation.org.
“In making my selections for IMOW I was drawn to the courageous efforts of women around the world who are challenging the status quo by presenting alternative representations and possibilities for women,” says Jennifer Siebel Newsom in her curator statement. “The media would like us to believe that there is only one ideal way a woman should look, act, or think; as a result, so many of our young girls internalize that notion. Yet by creating our own representations, we confuse and confront that ideal. Here I wanted to shine a light on some supremely talented artists who are pushing against the edges of our society’s definition of ‘woman.’”
Jennifer’s selections include “No Shortage of Diet Books,” about body image; “Jeju Grannies of the Sea,” depicting elderly women sea-divers; and “Domestic Mythology,” a photography and performance piece about gender inequity in the domestic sphere, plus many other amazing pieces from IMOW’s exhibition archives!
New guest curator selections will be launched every two weeks throughout September and October. Be sure to check back soon for the next guest curators and their selections!
