The cutting-edge art fair VOLTA NY returns to New York during The Armory Week with its original and provocative solo invitational format. Held at its usual, iconic urban location—right off 5th Avenue and opposite the Empire State Building—this year VOLTA NY hosts 92 international artists and their galleries on the 11th floor of 7W 34th Street.

Continuing the original VOLTA mandate to create a tightly-focused event that is a place for discovery and a showcase for current art production and relevant contemporary positions—regardless of the artist or gallery's age—VOLTA NY features exclusively solo projects of notable and emerging international artists, conceived to complement the exciting program of art presented by its sister fair, The Armory Show, with whom VOLTA NY shares the VIP and Talks Programmes and shuttles to and from both fairs.

A platform for challenging, often complimentary, sometimes competing ideas about contemporary art, the strictly solo format of VOLTA NY is what gives the fair its unique character. While visitors have positively compared VOLTA NY to doing a series of intense studio visits, nonetheless the dedication to a single artist, while surely the most striking of presentations in any economic landscape, has always been something of a risk. The dedication and confidence shown by the exhibiting galleries to continue to commit themselves to a risky and challenging format has therefore given rise to this year's title: No Guts No Glory, a phrase that can be applied both to the work on show, its creators and its supporters/presenters.

VOLTA NY brings together work from 92 remarkable artists, each artist having been selected for their dramatic visual presentation.

Highlights of VOLTA NY include a strong presence from video artists such as Vladimir Logutov, recently listed at "Younger than Jesus" exhibition, New-Museum, New York, as well as Guggenheim Fellowship Award-winner Federico Solmi's provocative video work; the VOLTA NY debut of 2009 Venice Biennale performance artist Jan Håfström; panoramic photography and site-specific installation from Henrietta Simson; receipient of Guggenheim, NEA and NYFA fellowships, Chambliss Giobbi arresting figurative collages; the highly stylized drawings of a Dante-esque underworld will be on show from Oscar de las FloresCarrie Schneider, fresh from a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago will be exhibiting a new series of works as will London based Ben Turnball with his "Hero" series, inspired by New York City fire men.

Returning from the 2009 Prague Biennale for his first exhibition with VOLTA NY Alexander Tinei will present a new body of unseen work; on the foot of his solo show at New Orleans Museum of Art, Skylar Fein will be presenting a new body of work. Returning to VOLTA NY for a second year, conceptual/installation artist Trong Gia Nguyen is sure to entertain with his ironic Video Elevator installation.

Aside from convenient public access by subway or taxi, visitors can reach VOLTA NY's prime location just off 5th Avenue with shared shuttles directly between The Armory Show on Pier 94 and the VOLTA NY site opposite The Empire State Building on 34th street.

In addition, visitors to VOLTA NY can now purchase a joint ticket for both VOLTA NY and our partner fair The Armory Show online now for a discounted price.

VOLTA was founded in Basel in 2005 by dealers Kavi Gupta (Chicago), Ulrich Voges (Frankfurt) and Friedrich Loock (Berlin). The sixth edition in Basel, VOLTA6, will be held to coincide with Basel Art Week.
