Who for? What for?

'Critique of Archival Reason' cuts against the grain of much recent exhibition practice within artistic research that has tended to use the display of archives as a key tactic. These new works will in different ways play with, contest, and cut against these conventions of archival display, re-asserting the role of art practice in interrupting business-as-usual and challenging those bureaucratic orthodoxies that might threaten to co-opt artistic research.

'Re : Public' turns the gallery at Temple Bar Gallery & Studios into a forum where the 'public' can meet with a range of artists and thinkers to reconsider the troubled relationship between art and society. The project aims to look again at preconceptions concerning 'publicness', and to debate whether there is even anything left that we can really call 'public'. After the fiasco of the property crash, participants have been invited to look again at the role played by architecture and urban planning in the construction of physical public space. In a world controlled by globalised markets, loyal to no nation, we ask if we still talk of meaningful democratic participation by 'the public'? Even if we can, is there any room, or any need, for the contributions of artists?

This network of exhibitionary moments accompanies the conference Arts Research: Publics and Purposes. In the cross-relationship and interaction of these exhibitionary moments as they evolve, they generate a space of enquiry for contemporary arts research. This project is co-organised by the European Arts Research Network and GradCAM-Dublin with Centrifugal.
