| _ ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE OPENS OCT 21Photographer Robert Mapplethorpe’s work has always provoked strong reactions. TheX, Y, and Z portfolios drew charges of obscenity in museums in the late 1980s and early 1990s, sparking an enduring debate over censorship, art, and the freedom of expression. These portfolios are now a part of LACMA’s permanent collection as a part of a joint acquisition with the Getty Museum of Mapplethorpe’s art and archives.

Glenn Adamson, head of research at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, shows how the primordial “blob” forms created at the 1962 workshops continue to influence art and design today.

| _ SPECIAL EVENT: COSTUME BALL OCT 31 | 8 PM Now in its ninth year, the Muse Costume Ball attracts more than one thousand costume-clad revelers to the museum for a night filled with tricks and treats. A preview of LACMA's new Stanley Kubrick exhibition fuels this year’s theme as the legendary director's work inspires live music, video projections, DJs, art installations, and the annual costume contest. Dress to impress and you might be one of the lucky few to be chosen for the contest, with the winners taking home fantastic prizes.

| _ SPECIAL CONCERT: KEN PRICE SCULPTURE, CELEBRATED IN A NIGHT OF JAZZ OCT 4 | 7 PM Sculptor Ken Price was a musician and a lifelong jazz lover. This special concert salutes two of his musical influences—trumpeters Chet Baker and Miles Davis—and features trumpeter Brian Swartz and his ensemble and John Beasley with his quintet. Ken Price Sculpture: A Retrospective will be free and open to the public 5–9 pm.

| _ FREE FILMS: L.A. INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S FILM FESTIVAL OCT 5–7 | VARIOUS TIMES The eighth annual Los Angeles International Children's Film Festival returns to LACMA to present more than one hundred films from around the world, including full-length, short-animation, live-action, and documentary films, organized by age group—toddlers through teens. The festival kicks off with a nostalgic screening of the classic youth ice hockey comedy The Mighty Ducks, celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year.
