chashama announcements:

chashama will be participating in GOBrooklyn's Open Studios Event on September 8 - 9. Stay tuned for an official invite for a chance to view over 85 visual artist studios at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Find your favorite chashama artist and register now on the GOBrooklyn website to vote on your favorite Brooklyn Studio artist for a community curated exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.

Liberty in the Forest by Jae Kyung Kim
chashama 266 West 37th Street (between 7th and 8th Ave)
July 26 - August 18, 2012
Jae Kyung Kim's exhibition of mixed media paintings and installation presents a visceral expression of the artists' thoughts and emotions. Liberty in the Forest explores the themes of fantastic nature and the vibrancy of life through energetic shapes, rhythmic brush strokes and vivid colors. Assembled on a wall with fifty pieces of paper, visitors can view this reflection of Kim's thoughts and desires through chashama's midtown window space.

Under the Mattress by Billy Frey 
chashama 303 10th Avenue (between 27th and 28th Streets)
August 2 - 25, 2012
Opening Reception: August 2nd, 5:30-8pm
Using vintage materials and imagery, Under the Mattress features the works of artist Billy Frey. With bold and often complex patterns of re-appropriated images, he offers us tales that are humorous, darkly disturbing, playful, perverse and fantastical.

Roundtable Discussion Series: 3 Wednesdays - August 8: "Art and Community Development", August 15: "Art and the Environment", August 22: "Art and Identity"
Closing Party: Saturday, August 25, 1-9pm with a performance by Joshua Seider
In collaboration with chashama, Nicholas Cohn Art Projects will transform an industrial building in Long Island City into a venue for socially motivated visual art. Art and Social Activism presents a group exhibition featuring an international roster of artists working in a range of media, from painting and sculpture to video and performance, connected by their focus on social issues of national and global concern.

Overlove/Underpass directed by choreographer Catherine Gallant
chashama @ Anita's Way Through Block (connecting W42nd & W43rd Streets between Broadway & 6th Ave)
Performances w/live music: August 15th & August 17th, 6-7pm
Overlove/Underpass brings energy and wonder to the understated beauty of this architectural thoroughfare. Fruit weilding goddesses oversee the pulse of daily life while fierce improvisators inscribe the splayed space. This new group work includes twelve dancers and envelopes three duets from Ms. Gallant's critically acclaimed meditation on romantic love, An Absurd Vice.

chashama 45 Broadway (between Rector & Morris Street)

Resolute Geometries is a selection of current, painted work by chashama studio artist, Roy Secord. Overtaking the lobby of 45 Broadway, the large scale paintings explore the intersection of geometries and color. The works are inspired by primitave art and decoration, esoteric symbolism and device, and technologically-advanced structure and system. The lobby of 45 Broadway is open to the public.

Resound 2 by Carl Auge

August 19 - 27, 2012
Opening Reception: August 19th, 5-9:30pm
Artist Carl Auge's solo exhibition Resound 2, features oil on canvas works that seek to express the conflicting task of creating visual equivalents of sound.
