CALIFORNIA DESIGN, 1930–1965: "LIVING IN A MODERN WAY"

ON VIEW THROUGH JUNE 3
May marks the final month that LACMA’s groundbreaking exhibition of mid-century art and design, California Design, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way,” will be on view. The exhibition features more than 350 objects—including furniture, clothing, jewelry, and even an entire Eames living room—that helped to define a distinct era of California art and style.

PERFORMANCE: ORION, THE GREAT MAN OF THE SKY
MAY 5 & 6 | 2 PM
Inspired by prehistoric, pre-Columbian, American Native, and Indian culture and artifacts, surrealist artist Alice Rahon once designed costumes and puppets for a dance production called Ballet d’Orion. The production was never staged in her lifetime. Now, the dance company Laboratorio de la Máscara travels from Mexico City for two special performances in conjunction with In Wonderland.

DISTINGUISHED ARCHITECTS LECTURE SERIES: JEANNE GANG
MAY 8 | 7:30 PM
MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang, FAIA, LEED AP, leads Studio Gang Architects, a collective of architects, designers, and thinkers whose projects confront contemporary issues. Recent projects include a proposal reimagining the suburb of Cicero, Illinois, as a part of MoMA’s exhibition Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream; and Reverse Effect, a book intended to explore and spark a radically greener future for the Chicago River and Great Lakes.

TALK: WHAT’S SO CALIFORNIA ABOUT CALIFORNIA DESIGN?

Bill Stern, executive director of the Museum of California Design in Los Angeles and consulting curator for LACMA's exhibition California Design, 1930–1965, discusses how local materials, war industries, and California’s burgeoning population made the state a beacon of style and design in the mid-century.

FOOD TOUR: A TASTE OF MEXICO: THE ART OF MOLE
JUNE 2 | 10 AM
Food plays an essential role in Children of the Plumed Serpent. LACMA and local food tour company Six Taste invite you to explore the lasting culture of ancient Mexico through food. The day begins with a curator-led tour of the exhibition. Participants will then take a private shuttle for mole tastings at two renowned local restaurants, Guelaguetza and Moles La Tia, to see how anicent Mexican cuisine lives on today. It's a tour not to be missed!

ART & MUSIC CONCERT: DAVID HENRY HWANG AND THE MUSIC OF OSVALDO GOLIJOV
MAY 5 | 4 PM
Playwright and librettist David Henry Hwang, best known for his Tony Award–winning play, M. Butterfly, is joined by Long Beach Opera artistic and general director Andreas Mitisek to discuss Hwang’s opera Ainadamar, composed by Osvaldo Golijov. Throughout the evening, Long Beach Opera will perform excerpts from the opera. This program is presented by LACMA and the Long Beach Opera.

MUSIC: THROUGH THE MIC: LACMA X HIP HOP

MAY 17 | 8 PM
Through the Mic is a new concert series at LACMA that explores contemporary Los Angeles hip hop, with an emphasis on the diversity of L.A.-based artists. Co-curated by LACMA and hip hop artist Murs, concerts will take place on the third Thursday of every month, May through October 2012. On May 17, Murs reunites with Eligh and Scarub to kick off the series with the first performance by their group 3MG in more than five years.

FILM INDEPENDENT AT LACMA: SPOTLIGHT ON PHILLIP GLASS

In celebration of Phillip Glass's seventy-fifth birthday, Film Independent at LACMA screens two films from the composer's ongoing series of collaborations with filmmaker Godfrey Reggio. Koyaanisqatsi (1982) and Powaqqatsi (1988) both offer awe-inspiring visions of modern life juxtaposed with nature’s sublime immensity.

EXHIBITION FILM SERIES: THE SUN SETS IN THE WEST: MID-CENTURY CALIFORNIA NOIR

Experience the dark side of modern living with this series of film noirs. Shot on location and set amid the bustle of big cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as the rugged emptiness of their surrounding deserts and forests, these films inject the Golden State’s benign climate with a strong dose of postwar angst.

Artist Gerhard Richter offers viewers rare insight into his artistic process in this intimate new documentary. Considered one of the world’s greatest living painters, the eighty-year-old Richter is seen working on a number of large-scale canvases in his Cologne studio.
