Sometimes a story prompts an artwork...
...and sometimes a work of art prompts a story. After seeing the photographs of Sathyanand Mohan, writer Himali Singh Soin is compelled to relate to us a childhood story of her grandfather. Such stories, sufferings, and the visages of Polish feminists and female artists come through in Paulina Olowska's paintings. Tim Nickodemus' paintings offer plenty of space for imagination, to create what both is and isn't there and then believe in it. We find the sideways in Cy Twombly's history through his rarely seen photographs, and we find echoes of Eugenia Butler in a strip mall in Los Angeles. Artist duo Hans & Gieves' cross-references of color and form bring to mind the nostalgia of libraries, repositories, and card catalogs. And the fetishization of the trappings of "book culture" brings back memories of cigarettes, black coffee, and endless books.
