Mama Then & Now
What role did your grandmother play in raising you? Do you ask your mother for advice in pregnancy and child-rearing? How do changes in society and technology affect the way generations of mothers and daughters relate to each other?
Women around the world answer these questions in our newest gallery, Mama Then & Now, which explores how the experiences of mothers, grandmothers, and daughters compare.
Just a few highlights from this inter-generational gallery include:
  • An original song by Egyptian DJ Mutamassik, dedicated to her grandmother, who was forced to marry early and give up her dreams of being a doctor to comply with tradition. Read “Dr. Aida” and listen to Mutamassik’s song>>
  • A tongue-in-cheek embroidery series from Kathy Halper, who addresses how social networks such as Facebook have affected her relationship with her children. Check out "Friend Me" now>>
  • Musimbi Kanyoro, CEO of the Global Fund for Women, telling readers about the how her experience differs from that of her mother and daughter, and what big-picture goals remain the same across generations. Read Musimbi’s essay here>>
  • A “Mamas’ Voices” video featuring women from China, Norway, Afghanistan, and more, talking about how their experiences of motherhood compared to other generations of women in their communities. Watch Mamas’ Voices now>>
  • And much more >>
Imagine what life would be like if you, your own mother, or your daughter had died during childbirth. While you check out the new gallery, be sure to also Take the Pledge to improve maternal mortality rates globally, and prevent other families from experiencing that devastating loss. Thank you for your support!
