Remarkable Women
At our 2012 Celebrating Change benefit on March 8, International Women's Day, IMOW presented Google Vice President Marissa Mayer with our first-ever Innovator Award, for her work as Google's first female engineer and her part in enhancing the involvement of women in the field of computer science. Marissa's work at Google has influenced how hundreds of millions of people access information online, and she has played a pivotal role in shaping Google’s most important products, such as Gmail and Google search.  She had some great things to say about women heroes, accepting yourself, and the role IMOW can help play in inspiring women to fulfill their greatest potential. Watch the whole video here!
When accepting the Innovator award, Marissa spoke about the importance of portraying many types of Heroes, including women featured in IMOW's MAMA exhibition such as Prum Than, whose field work in Cambodia empowers women to make safe reproductive health choices, and Rahel Nardos, who pioneered a program working on repairing fistula in Ethiopia.
Says Marissa Mayer of IMOW’s work, “A showcase like the International Museum of Women that can highlight a whole group of different role models and heroes is vital to making the world a better place, not because people hearing the stories will be inspired to be like one of them, but because people hearing the stories will learn that passion and success come in all forms and sizes, and that they can achieve it on their own terms—by being themselves, and by doing it their way.”
Thank you, Marissa, and Congratulations!
