February at LACMA: In Wonderland, Metropolis II, Free Target Monday, and more!

METROPOLIS II
NOW ON VIEW
Check out more than a thousand miniature cars and a dozen trains zipping through a futuristic cityscape in Chris Burden’s Metropolis II (he also created Urban Light, our lamp sculpture on Wilshire Blvd.). The Los Angeles Times calls the piece “an epic art installation that looks like a toy racetrack or train set on speed.” Visits are welcome everyday, but make sure to also see the work in action Friday through Sunday.

IN WONDERLAND: THE SURREALIST ADVENTURES OF WOMEN ARTISTS IN MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATES

COMMON PLACES: PRINTING, EMBROIDERY, AND THE ART OF GLOBAL MAPPING
FEB 18–MAY 13

Opening in just a few days, Common Places examines how the transformation of works printed on paper into embroideries has conveyed information across time and place. The exhibition features three gorgeous textiles from LACMA’s own collection that are must-sees: a seventeenth-century valance, a cigarette silks quilt, and Alighiero Boetti’s Mappa(seen here).

LECTURE: GENUINE OR FAKE? ESTABLISHING AUTHENTICITY IN TRADITIONAL CHINESE PAINTING

How do we determine a real from a fake Chinese painting? What signs point to the difference between a copy and a forgery? These questions have confounded collectors and connoisseurs for centuries, but in this fascinating lecture by LACMA’s curator of Chinese and Korean art, we’ll examine some of the key issues and techniques involved in the connoisseurship of Chinese painting. Author Anne-Marie O’Connor speaks in conjunction with the publication of her new book,The Lady in Gold, a suspenseful tale of the battle to recover a famous Gustav Klimt painting created in turn-of-the-century Vienna and stolen by the Nazis during World War II.

This double feature highlights Danish director and screenwriter Lars von Trier. InZentropa, von Trier’s noir-soaked thriller, a young and idealistic American of German stock returns to postwar Germany.
