| IN WONDERLAND: THE SURREALIST ADVENTURES OF WOMEN ARTISTS IN MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATESJAN 29–MAY 6 In Wonderland is the first large-scale survey of its kind, bringing together forty-seven women surrealist artists, including masters such as Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois, and Leonora Carrington. Driven by an impulse for independence and self-expression, these women used their art to subvert traditional notions of gender, sexuality, and motherhood, delving freely and deeply into their subconscious and dreams to create art that shocks, delights, and amazes. | _ ELLSWORTH KELLY: PRINTS AND PAINTINGS JAN 22–APR 22 In a career spanning four decades, Ellsworth Kelly has established himself as a master of pure color and shape. Ellsworth Kelly: Prints and Paintings is the first exhibition to focus on Kelly’s prolific print practice since 1988. Organized thematically, the exhibition explores his major motifs: curves, contrasts, and grids, bringing together more than one hundred prints, including selected prints from his forty-year collaboration with the legendary Los Angeles print workshop Gemini G.E.L. | METROPOLIS II OPENS JAN 14 Metropolis II is an intense and complex kinetic sculpture that features hundreds of miniature cars speeding through an elaborate roadway system and trains hustling along on intricately placed tracks. Towering nine feet high and spread across more than five hundred square feet, Metropolis II is massive and, according to artist Chris Burden, “produces in the viewer the stress of living in a dynamic, active, and bustling twenty-first-century city.” Learn more_ | |

| _ SPECIAL FILM SCREENING: THE OTHER CONQUEST JAN 27 | 7:30 PM The Other Conquest (La Otra Conquista) is a powerful drama about the aftermath of the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 1520s, told from the perspective of the indigenous Aztec people. Receiving wide critical acclaim during its run in the United States, the film was ranked as one of the Los Angeles Times's top ten films of 2000.
