October at LACMA: Final weeks of Tim Burton, California Design opens, plus a new film program, and more

PACIFIC STANDARD TIME AT LACMA
Pacific Standard Time is a collaboration of more than sixty cultural organizations across Southern California that have all created exhibitions about the birth of the L.A. art scene. LACMA hosts five of its own shows that tell this story through wildly different lenses.

Bonus: Check them out for free (along with the rest of LACMA’s permanent collection galleries) this Sunday, October 2. Free shuttles will also run between LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and L.A.C.E. throughout the day. 
CALIFORNIA DESIGN, 1930–1965: "LIVING IN A MODERN WAY"
OCT 1–MAR 25

This exhibition is the first major study of California midcentury modern design. With more than 300 objects—furniture, ceramics, metalwork, fashion and textiles, and industrial and graphic design—the exhibition examines California's role in shaping the material culture of the entire country.

MURAL REMIX: SANDRA DE LA LOZA
OCT 15–JAN 22

Sandra de la Loza, founder of the Pocho Research Society of Erased and Invisible History, samples obscure and forgotten details in murals produced during the 1970s to explore the history of the mural in relationship to L.A. urbanism, countercultural aesthetics, and art as a social practice.

Don't miss the final month of Tim Burton! Visitors have traveled from all corners of the world to experience the 700+ drawings, paintings, photographs, puppets, and more from the master of the macabre.
New early bird hours! On Saturdays and Sundays in October, Tim Burton will open at 10 am.
Closing Weekend: To celebrate the closing weekend of the exhibition (which happensto coincide with Halloween), the gallery will be open for 38 hours straight. Come in costume and celebrate the final hours of the beloved exhibition.

MONET/LICHTENSTEIN: ROUEN CATHEDRALS
OCT 1–JAN 1
From 1892–1895, Claude Monet painted thirty views of the Rouen Cathedral in France. Over six decades later, Roy Lichtenstein was inspired to paint his own pop art cathedral series. This installation pairs the two artists' cathedral paintings, uniting these (seemingly) disparate artists.

GLENN LIGON: AMERICA
OCT 23–JAN 22
In the late 1980s and early '90s, Glenn Ligon became known for exploring race, sexuality, representation, and language in his work. This exhibition— his first mid-career retrospective— includes unknown early material and the reconstruction of seminal bodies of work.

CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST: ADAM SILVERMAN
OCT 2 | 4 pm
Hear artist Adam Silverman of Heath Ceramics in conversation with Kulapat Yantrasast, principal of wHY Architecture. In conjunction with California Design, Silverman has created a limited edition ceramic work for LACMA. The edition of twenty-five, plus two artist proofs, includes a signed and numbered stoneware pot, a signed, numbered, and framed black-and-white photograph, and ten postcards with an image of the work in the artist’s studio. Free, seating is limited.

CONVERSATION WITH DESIGNER BERNARD KESTER
OCT 9 | 3 pm

Meet designer Bernard Kester and preview his new work, Strand Scarf, 2011, created on the occasion of California Design. Bernard and costume and textiles curator Kaye Spilker will talk about the design world of Los Angeles in the 1950s and 60s, and its influences on fashion icons. Free, seating is limited.

THE ART OF WINE: CALIFORNIA WINE BY DESIGN
OCT 22 | 6 pm
LACMA presents the fifth installment of its popular Art of Wine series. Join educator Mary Lenihan for a tour of the California Design exhibition followed by insightful commentary from wine historian Barbara Baxtor of Planet Wine, outlining the history of winemaking in California. Five California wines will be sampled, accompanied by artisan bread, tapenade, and California cheese.

MUSE COSTUME BALL

Join a ghoulish cast of friends and fiends, as we pay our last respects to the dearly departed with a Dead Man’s Ball. Performances by KILLSONIC, Jeremiah Red, and Sneaky Nietzsche, along with environments created by Labyrinth of Jareth, will be sure to rock the house and raise the dead. Dress to impress in your funerary best or a costume of your choice, as we conjure up a night of art, music, dancing, and of course, the annual costume contest.
