RE/Mixed Media Festival 2011

RE/Mixed Media Festival 2011 Logo

Hello from RE/Mixed Media

Dear Friends,
I am writing because you were good enough to add yourself to our email list on the official RE/Mixed Media Festival website.  Since that was probably sometime last year, and lest you thought that we had fallen off the face of the earth, I'm happy to let you know that there WILL be a 2011 festival - we have moved it to October 22nd and expanded it to 3 venues to accomodate all the great art, performance, music and panel discussions we plan to provide.  This year, we'll be at One Arm Red, a fantastic venue on the Jay Street waterfront in DUMBO that includes not one but THREE full perfomance and video spaces.  We'll also be at the Underwater Lounge at the Water Street Restaurant and Bar, just around the corner from Galapagos, where we'll be offering up food and drink specials along with your remix all day long.  We're currently working on finalizing the details for our third venue, and should have an announcement about that very soon.

2011 Kickstarter Campaign

Early this morning, we launched the official Kickstarter Campaign for the 2011 festival.  If you enjoyed last year's fest and want us to be able to continue to do this each year, I hope you will take a moment to give a little something to the festival this year.  Not only do we have some amazing perks for various levels of giving, but by giving at least $25, you will receive a full festival pass, saving yourself $15 off what the regular passes will cost when they go on sale in September.  Our $2,500 goal represents only about 25% of this year's budget (the rest will be covered by fundraising and ticket sales) and will help us pay for things like: our office rent and supplies, venue rental, insurance, transportation, publicity & promotion etc.  There's a lot to pay for so please keep funding even if we've met our goal!

About This Year's Festival
The RE/Mixed Media Festival is a celebration of collaborative art-making and creative appropriation. It's the artists' contribution to the ongoing conversation about remixing, mashups, copyright law, fair use, and the freedom of artists to access their culture in order to add to and build upon it.

The festival - which will take place at 3 venues in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY - features performances, panel discussions, hip-hop, sampling, beat-box, film & video, fashion, DIY, food, DJs, technology, interactive installations, painting, sculpture, software, hacking, and much more!
The first festival in 2010 was a huge success where over 1800 festival goers enjoyed appearances by MobySteinskiRicky PowellSweatshoppeDeanna ZandtJesper Juul, and over 50 other artists, performers, musicians and DJs!  This year, the festival's artistic advisory board - which includes Paul D. MIller (aka DJ Spooky), Elisa Kreisinger, Josephine Dorado, Christopher Weingarten, Noah Tarnow and others - have helped us put together a day of truly top-notch art and performance.  The lineup hasn't been 100% confirmed but some of the highlights will include:

  • The world premiere of the full "64 Paintings/64 Plays," a multimedia mindscape which  workshopped at Bowery Poetry Club in June to packed houses and received tremendous positive critical response.
  • video remix program curated by one of the artistic leaders of the field
  • A critical panel discussion on sampling and Hip Hop culture featuring legendary hip hop artists, writers, critics, and DJs
  • An interactive Art & Technology exhibit with artist talks & demonstrations/workshops in creating interactive art using MS Kinect and more!
  • live game show that will challenge your knowledge of remix culture and other critical issues.
I hope we will see you this year.  I thank you all in advance for your ongoing support.
