Where We’re Coming From

Stories About Context in Young Women Speaking the Economy Put Things in Perspective

We’ve heard about the tough Choices young women around the world have to make, and we’ve heard how the financial Crisis has affected the next generation of women workers. Now, the young women who helped create our newest online exhibition Young Women Speaking the Economy help put those stories in a larger Context, offering a look into some of the cultural traditions, personal histories, and social norms that inform their lives.
Here are just a few of the incredible stories in Context:
  • The photography slideshow “Pang–araw–araw Na Kabuhayan Ng Kababaihan: The Everyday Lives of Working Filipinas from Adjie Albiento and Corrine Antonio displays portraits of women working in the informal economy in thePhilippines, a common choice for many Filipinas.
  • Ola Faisal Hansen’s essay The Economic Impact of FGM includes interviews with women in Sudan who have experienced female genital mutilation and describes how FGM affects Sudanese women’s ability to work.
  • Women, Work and Womb”, from Denmark students Kristina Moeller Andersen and Sofie Krogh Nelson, talks about how government programs that allow for long paid maternity leave and childcare affect women’s decisions about work.
  • In the essay Learning from the Past, Sahar Momand talks about being the how her mother and grandmother’s experiences in overcoming challenges have affected her personal perspective when it comes to finding a job.
