EXHIBITION OPENING
Tim Burton |
On view through October 31
This major retrospective explores the full range of Tim Burton's creative work, both as a director of live-action and animated films, and as an artist, illustrator, photographer, and writer. Taking inspiration from pop culture, fairytales, and traditions of the gothic, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as an expression of a personal vision. Featuring over 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, Tim Burton is expected to be the must-see exhibition in L.A. this summer!

FILM SERIES
The Fantastical Worlds of Tim Burton |
This retrospective showcases film from Burton’s days in Disney’s animation department up to his latest blockbuster. Through the years, he has presented a gallery of iconic protagonists—from giddy man-child Pee-Wee Herman to dandyish Jack Skellington; from motor-mouthed "bio-exorcist" Beetlejuice to blood-thirsty barber Sweeney Todd. These strangers in the strangest of lands offer variations of Burton's recurring themes—the outsider's search for a place to belong, the frisson of dual identities, mainstream society's manifold hypocrisies—which continue to resonate with audiences around the world.
