Apply Now for Boundary Crossings: An Institute in Contemporary Animated Arts With the advent of digital technologies, hybrid moving images have emerged as the norm – rendering boundaries between live action, animation and image processing as porous as the platforms of display that host them. Boundary Crossings: An Institute in Contemporary Animated Arts provides an intensive immersion in interdisciplinary explorations designed to prompt critical and creative outcomes at the leading edge of contemporary animated arts and scholarship. Traversing the terrain of space, time and form, this two-week innovative institute explores the future of film as a form of architecture and also as an extension of the body through infused theory and practice sessions, lectures, screenings and hands-on making. PROGRAM Application is open to practitioners working in the field, undergraduate and graduate level students. Guided by internationally renowned scholars and working practitioners, students select from two strands for a two-week course of study: Gizmos & Gadgets Inclusive of early optical toys and the arduino triggered sculptures of kinetic artists, Gizmos & Gadgets aims to spring the door to time-based three-dimensional experiences. Animating Public Spaces Our society is increasingly colonized by multiple moving image ‘screens,' Animating Public Spaces is a catalyst for creating animated work that co-habits in architectural space. Rolling admissions are accepted through May but enrollment is limited and early application is strongly recommended. July 18–29, 2011 INSTITUTE DIRECTOR Rose Bond produces work at the juncture of animation, architecture and public art. She has received honors from the American Film Institute, The Princess Grace Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her large-scale, site-specific installations navigate the allegories of place and have been shown at many international festivals. She is an associate professor and department chair in Contemporary Animated Arts at PNCA. Learn more about Rose on her website. FACULTY David Eckard is an artist, performer and educator based in Portland, Oregon. His practice as a visual artist includes fabricated objects, drawings and prints, installations and performances. He is an Associate Professor and Chair of the sculpture department at PNCA. Norman Klein is a critic, novelist and historian of urban and media culture. His work centers on the relationship between collective memory and power and its mediation in cultural production and consumption. Lorelei Pepi is an internationally recognized and award-winning animator whose work includes highly experimental forms. Her work is interdisciplinary and explores animation vis-à-vis a variety of art practices and cinematic production. Marina Zurkow has been recognized for her moving, psychological narratives, primarily in animated form, about humans and their relationship to animals, plants and the weather. Zurkow’s work ranges from multi-channel videos, customized multi-screen computer pieces and cartoons, to participatory, temporary, public artworks. Presented by PNCA’s Contemporary Animated Arts Department with support from PNCA + FIVE (Ford Institute for Visual Education).
