Opening: India's Fabled City |
December 12–February 27
LACMA's newest exhibition, India's Fabled City: The Art of Courtly Lucknow, explores the incredibly rich artistic output of an Indian city so prolific in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that it eclipsed Delhi as a cultural center. This stunning exhibition features a full array of artworks from Lucknow—from oil paintings and vintage photography to textiles and decorative art—and delves into the dynamic interaction between Indians and Europeans, the interplay between their tastes and traditions, and the hybrid lives led by many of the region's residents.

Film Screening: The Chess Players |
December 11 | 7:30 pm
Selected to complement the exhibition, India's Fabled City, The Chess Player is a lavish film about two Muslim landlords in Lucknow who are consumed with their games of chess (an Indian invention) while their musician-poet king is being targeted by the English East India Company for a takeover. India's greatest filmmaker takes a gently satiric approach to his depiction of this personal and historical situation.
