documentations : affiches psychédéliques, Baudelaire, Charcot, Cocteau, Dali, Gysin, Michaux,
Ouin, Saint-Laurent, Shelton, Post, Witkiewicz...

Shaping a Collection. An interpretation of the Fundación Botín Collection
5 July–18 September 2011

Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola
Santander, Spain

www.fundacionbotin.org

Five major Spanish artists and six international ones confront each other in curator Carmen Giménez's interpretation of the Botín Foundation's Art Collection in the summer exhibition at the Foundation's venue in the centre of Santander, Spain.

The exhibition consists of 17 pieces by the artists:

⎯ Miroslaw Balka (Warsaw, 1958)
⎯ Mona Hatoum (Beirut, 1952)
⎯ Jannis Kounellis (Peiraias, Greece, 1936)
⎯ Antoni Muntadas (Barcelona, Spain, 1942)
⎯ Juan Muñoz (Madrid, 1953 - Ibiza, Spain, 2001)
⎯ Juan Navarro Baldeweg (Santander, 1939)
⎯ Gabriel Orozco (Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, 1962)
⎯ Julião Sarmento (Lisbon, Portugal, 1948)
⎯ Thomas Schütte (Oldenburg, Germany, 1954)
⎯ Santiago Serrano (Toledo, Spain, 1942)
⎯ Juan Uslé (Santander, Spain, 1954)

When the Botín Foundation's Art Collection became specialized in contemporary art in 1993, it did so with the aim of reflecting the work being done in this field by the Foundation. Accordingly, the Collection contains works of art by the leaders—internationally acclaimed artists—of the art workshops that are held annually in Villa Iris, and by the artists who have been awarded one of the Foundation's Visual Arts Grants. Together they form a plural mosaic of concepts and disciplines that, thanks to a wide range of different artistic generations and approaches, is a testament to the art of our times.

Today the Collection is growing, as are the projects of the Foundation, whose sights are now set on the future Botín Art Centre in Santander. Thus, the Collection is being expanded, contextualized and complemented by adding artists from the same generation who are seen as essential for understanding and completing the vision of the Foundation's Art Collection and its future project.

Together with the other works of art in the Collection, these are the fundamentals on which the Foundation will build its future, a future bound to the new Botín Art Centre whose activities and programme will seek to attract and support talent as the main force behind the development of society.

The art critic Francisco Calvo Serraller has written the text for this exhibition catalogue. In it, he explains how this summit of artists reveals what is occurring in art today.

Short video of the exhibition

From the 5th July to the 18th September 2011.

At the Botín Foundation's Venue, Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, Santander. Spain.

Daily opening hours, 11.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 21.30. Entrance free.
