Spartacus Chetwynd, A Tax Haven Run by Women Part of the programme for Palace Party Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Copenhagen) is re-opening after a period of refurbishment, with a programme that features three new exhibitions as well as a grand Palace Party. EXHIBITIONS On Saturday 5 March 2011 Charlottenborg is opening its new exhibition season with the following projects: The Spring Exhibition 2011 (5 March–25 April) The Repetition Festival Show – Clemens von Wedemeyer (5 March–22 May) Research Programme – Sarah Pierce (5 March–8 May) The Spring Exhibition occupies the impressive set of twelve galleries in Charlottenborg's south wing. This year's exhibition features 54 artists from around the world, including many artists from Scandinavia and northern Europe, as well as others from Israel, Palestine, Japan and the USA. The selection reflects the increasing internationalism of this long-established and much-loved annual event. The Clemens von Wedemeyer exhibition is presented in three galleries in the north wing, and is the first significant showing in Scandinavia for this acclaimed artist. Von Wedemeyer is one of the leading contemporary artists working with film, and his exhibition is staged like a film festival, with a changing programme over the duration of the project. The Research Programme is a new strand at Charlottenborg, and the first block has been created by the Dublin-based artist Sarah Pierce. The programme will always be generated by a researcher-in-residence, who will have the use of the Kunsthal's guest apartment. It will always include a display, but also a range of events—and Pierce's curated events take the form of a film club. PALACE PARTY On Saturday 5 March, and coinciding with the start of the new exhibitions, Charlottenborg is holding a grand Palace Party (11am–9pm). This special day of performances and other events takes place across the Kunsthal but also in other spaces within the Charlottenborg palace complex, including the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Danish Art Library. On 5 March admission to the Kunsthal is free all day. Palace Party brings together Danish and international artists and musicians in a broad range of performances, concerts and temporary interventions. The day starts with a parade of twelve tractors that proceeds from the Town Hall to Charlottenborg, followed by a tractor concert—organised by the Swedish artist Sven-Åke Johansson—in the palace's courtyard. The day ends with a dramatic spectacle in the Art Academy's auditorium, a major collaborative performance staged by the British artist Spartacus Chetwynd. The artists and groups represented in Palace Party include: Nina Beier, Cezary Bodzianowski, George Brecht, Spartacus Chetwynd, Simon Fujiwara, Prinz Gholam, Karl Holmqvist, Ragnar Kjartansson with Kjartan Sveinsson, Carl Krull, Sven-Åke Johansson, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, yoyooyoy with The Sons of God, Rasmus Graff and Claus Haxholm. The collaborators include: the Danish Tractor Museum, IMO and Line Ellegaard, and the Royal Danish Theater and Ballet School. CHANGES AT CHARLOTTENBORG During recent months some changes have been made in the fabric and presentation of Charlottenborg. The most obvious changes are in the foyer and café, which have been re-designed with the help of the Italian designer Martino Gamper. A new floor has been laid, and the space equipped with furniture designed by Gamper—including customised versions of Danish design classics. In addition to its café, the Kunsthal now also houses an independent bookstore, called Charlottenborg Books. The latter offers a small and distinctive selection of books and magazines, including publications in the fields of fine art, critical design, typography, literature and theory. Finally, the Belgian designer Sara De Bondt has supervised a major redesign of Charlottenborg's graphic identity and materials. ORGANISERS AND SUPPORTERS The Spring Exhibition is organised by the Charlottenborg Fonden in association with the Kunsthal. It is supported by the Danish Arts Council (Committees for Visual Arts and International Visual Arts), Montana – Peter Lassen, Knud Højgaards Fond, Grosserer L. F. Foghts Fond, Nordic Culture Fond and OCA. The Repetition Festival Show was originally curated by Tessa Giblin for Project Arts Centre, Dublin. The exhibition is supported by the Goethe-Institut, Munich. Palace Party has been initiated by Charlottenborg's curator, Rhea Dall. It is supported by the Danish Arts Council (Committees for Visual Arts and International Visual Arts), the Danish Arts Foundation (Comissioned Works), the British Council and Tuborg. Charlottenborg is supported by The Danish Ministry of Culture. The refurbishment has been supported by a special grant from the Ministry, with additional support provided by Montana.
