The VIEWS: Bric-a-Brac to Superflat - July 16 - 22

(Kathleen MelianTilt, 2012, oil on canvas, 66 x 51 in. ArtSlant Showcase Juried Winner.)
Overlap, pile, flow, flatten...
Ron Johnson's controlled ebbs and flows of paint interlock and overlap into cartoony compositions. Residents at the Chicago Artists' Coalition pile, paint, hang, and weave plastic bags, fibers, patterns, bric-a-brac and knickknacks. Ivan Lozano melts and mixes photographs, screens, and mirrors, immersing the viewer in a dark vision. Lalla Essaydi's models are enveloped by their surroundings, consumed by architecture (but the message falls flat). Going Superflat, Takashi Murakami's newest ingenues bring a blend of traditional Japanese painting and manga-inspired illustrations to a new gallery in Berlin; while in Paris, Aya Takano's diamond-shaped dreamlike paintings flatten perspectives and hierarchies alike.
In the RACKROOM
Ana Finel Honigman chats with Molly Crabapple about the prejudice against illustration, art and activism, and her Week in Hell.
In the GEOSLANT
Painter Richard Huntington weighs the issues and ethics of live modeling.
