Contemporary Photography Issue

© Ann Woo With this newsletter we want to broaden our understanding of contemporary photography by analysing three different approaches in a realm that fills our lives with joy and happiness. We didn’t really go crazy elaborating which categories should or should not be included. That would have required some boring and opinionated brainstorming, which would probably have resulted in a juiceless catalogue. Rather we followed our hearts and looked at the artists we like and admire, and created connections based on their working methods. We hope this can inspire you.

WOMEN IN ART PHOTOGRAPHY All of a sudden, towards the end of last year, significant names such as Taschen and Humble Arts Foundation discovered that there were some women working in the realm of Art Photography. We have to admit that we at Glossom were already aware of that. We thought we would put together some women that adopt different working processes and aesthetics in order to give you a general taste of the feminine touch in art photography. Read more   ADDING LAYERS TO THE PHOTOGRAPHIC MEDIUM. It has been barely 40 years since photography has been appreciated as a fine art form. People say that we owe it to that brilliant man that was John Szarkwoski, who, by showing images by then unknown photographers such as Lee Freelander, Diane Arbus (in 1967) and William Eggleston (in 1976) shocked art audiences and artists (e.g. Ansel Adams) of the times. Read more   STILL LIFE IN CONTEMPORARY ART PHOTOGRAPHY / VIDEO. While some people regard still life as some pretentious boring exercise, this style allows many artists to have a greater control over the conceptual aspects of their work. Furthermore it gives you the possibility to work whenever you want as opposed to run around waiting for a beautiful moment to unfold between your eyes, and avoid all of the annoyances of carrying around a camera, including getting beaten up and mugged for a $50 point and shoot.Read more
